Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but within Together exists a intense meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.
