They're Applying across America What They Did with Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and defining instances – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of multiple weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing the public his plans for a lavish reception room twice the size of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of deaths due to his slashing to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and growing, and presently research predicted his energy policies would result in fatalities 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – really, no other president would have conceived – unilaterally destroying major areas of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the Earth' to 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who might not perceive it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.

We have watched across decades as politically conservative religious groups transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they transformed an image of affection into a symbol of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message focuses on affection for others, particularly for the disadvantaged – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as an act of passive acceptance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your coat you should give them your pullover too.

The evident and clear reality that the Jesus from scripture calls for a kind of profound affection centered on the needy has perpetually caused Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness demanding to be contained. In the fifties it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Highest Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the persistent defiance to Trump emerge in this past year. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and likely has encouraged electorate to turn out in numbers in interim political contests. We shall require to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners during all protests and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

We will be questioned ... about how you treated the immigrant? Did you welcome them and embrace them or reject?

The nation is most protected, essentially, through connection to the highest about American history, just as Christianity is optimally secured through connection to what makes it special and beautiful, specifically the model of Christ. In both situations does it mean feigning the most damaging about the nation and religious tradition did not happen; it signifies both meekness and conviction, a combination that serious US believers should be comfortable with.
