It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a six-month break that started in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may lead to one episode of the series adapting one chapter, with others alternatively handling more material or more to compensate for scheduling.
This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on being on air for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
