Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
